Main Purpose of a Text
This week we worked on identifying the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to describe, answer or explain. We worked on this concept whole group and also in small reading groups. It is a difficult and very important concept. I taught the children to remember the three main purposes by thinking of PIE (persuade, inform or entertain). Some of the children still get these three ideas confused, so we will continue working on it. After your child has read a non-fiction book or article, ask your child what he/she thinks the author's purpose is to practice this skill at home.
