Another way that volcanoes are helpful is as a source of energy.  The area around a volcano is very hot.  This heat often creates hot springs, geysers and boiling mud pools.  They can also be used for geothermal energy.  Pipes are placed in the Earth and the steam from them powers turbines to make electricity.
