Volcanic Ash Helps the Soil

Volcanic Ash Helps the Soil

Volcanoes can also help the soil.  When volcanoes erupt, they send out lots of ash that lands all around it.  The ash contains nutrients that are helpful to the soil.  Because of this, soil around an eruption site is very rich in nutrients.

When it rains the nutrients are then taken down into the soil.  Guess what is living in the soil?  The roots of plants which then use the minterals to help them grow.

Hawaii has very rich soil because of volcanoes.  Taro and sweet potatoes grow very well in this soil.

These are sweet potatoes.
