Did you know that there is new land forming everyday? In the last 100 years, there have been 19 new islands that have formed. One of the most famous is an island called Surtsey. It is located in Iceland. Even though it was just formed, many plants and animals are beginning to live there.

Seals were seen around the island soon after it was formed.
The first bird to live on Surtsey was the puffin.
Many starfish are now found on the part of the island that is below the water.
Lichens (shown below) and mosses were the first plants to grow on the island of Surtsey.
