A lake is a body of water that is completely surrounded by land.  Almost all lakes are freshwater.

 

 The most well-known lakes in North America are called the Great Lakes.  Their names are Lake Erie, Lake Michigan, Lake Ontario, Lake Huron and Lake Superior.
