Glaciers usually begin between mountains.  Snow builds up between the mountains over thousands of years.  It compresses into a large thick ice mass.

 

Glaciers contain the largest amount of freshwater on Earth.  Glaciers are constantly moving.  Gravity makes them flow downhill.
