How Do Scientists Measure Earthquakes?

How do scientists measure earthquakes?  Scientists used to use a scale, called a Richter scale to measure the force of earthquakes.  But modern technology has improved the way we measure earthquakes.   Today, an earthquake's size is typically reported simply by its magnitude.  All over the world, scientists have set up monitoring stations.  These stations have seismographs or seismometers.  They measure how much the ground shakes over time.  This helps scientists figure out the earthquake's time, location and magnitude.   How does a seismograph work?  Click on the button to find out.
